The Chennai music and dance festival, better known as the Marghazi festival of dance and music of South India,is held from mid-December to mid-January in Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu. The festival is held at a number of venues, around the city,by various sabhas(organising bodies) or organisations.

:History:
The Marghazi festival was started in 1927 to commemorate the anniversary of th Madras Music Academy. In December 1927,when the Congress party met in Chennai(then known as Madras),they organised a series of music concerts by well-known performers, as part of the meet. This marked the begining of the season of music concerts in the month of Marghazi. The event was widely accepted and patronised by the public, firstly because it was vacation time and secondly, because the weather was pleasantly cool.

In Tamil Nadu, great emphasis is given to dance as a form of prayer worship. Tamil devote the month of Marghazi, entirely, to music and dance. During this period,no auspicious functions, like weddings, are held.Strangely,it rains heavily in the week before Christmas. This is quiet unusual and many superstitious Tamils believe that the wet spell is in someway related to the removal of Kannagi’s statue.

Kannagi, the wife of young Kovalan, is an endearing heroine in Tamil folklore. She is known for her loyalty towards her unfaithful husband. Her battle to save him from imminent death and her curse on Madurai are well known.
